saraSara Grace
Sara Grace was born in South Carolina but grew up in South Africa, Australia, and Singapore as the child of missionary parents. She attends Converse College and is majoring in Creative and Professional Writing with the hopes of working in publishing or marketing after graduation. She has worked for Converse's residential life, is a staff member of Converse's CoCo Radio and Concept Literary Magazine, and will be an Orientation Leader this fall. Her favorite part of interning with the Atlantic Institute was meeting people who pursue peace and prioritize understanding those who are different from themselves. Thanks to her experience with the Atlantic Institute, Sara Grace knows, now more than ever, that openness towards "the other" has immeasurable power to unite and strengthen humanity.
 
callahanCallahan
Born and raised in South Carolina, Callahan now attends Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. In her junior year, Callahan is majoring in International and Global Studies, with a minor in Economics. In addition to her studies Callahan is involved with Student Government, volunteer organizations on campus as well as working in Facilities Services. As part of her major Callahan looks forward to studying abroad in Prague, Czech Republic in the Spring of 2017. Callahan is thankful for the opportunities given to her while interning with the Atlantic Institute, such as meeting wonderfully open-minded individuals hoping to make the world a more peaceful place.
benBen DuBard
Ben was born and raised in Florence, South Carolina and is a rising sophomore at the University of South Carolina majoring in Anthropology. He is fluent in Portuguese after studying abroad in Brazil his sophomore year of high school through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Ben is a huge soccer fan and plays intramural soccer at USC during the school year. Along with his passion for soccer, he also enjoys playing guitar and writing in his free time. Ben has enjoyed working with the Atlantic Institute to spread a message of peace and tolerance and hopes to continue spreading this message for years to come.

I am Dionna Green. I am a senior at Claflin University majoring in english. My future endeavors consist of owning my own daycare, teaching prek-3rd grade, and expanding my Mary Kay business.

IsabellaIsabella Mekker 
Isabella is from Greenville, South Carolina but spent parts of her life growing up in both Germany and China. She is a student of Political Science at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts – where she is a member of the International Students Association and is passionate about International Politics. Isabella possesses dual citizenship of the United States and Germany and as such, experiences both cultures and languages at home. She wishes to pursue International Relations and Security after she attends graduate school. In working with the Atlantic Institute she was able to gain experience in peaceful change making at a grassroots level. She loved being able to see different religious, ethnic, and cultural groups within South Carolina interact with compassion and understanding of each other’s differences.
k watersKatherine Waters
Katherine Waters was born in South Carolina and is now an English and Philosophy major at Wofford College. After graduation, she wants to find a career that combines her love of writing and communications with anthropological studies. At Wofford, she is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and recruitment counselor for the Panhellenic Council. She is also a staff writer for the school's newspaper, The Old Gold and Black, and received an award from the South Carolina Press Association for her writing. She loved working with the Atlantic Institute and seeing people come together despite religious, cultural or ethnic differences. Katherine believes that, in an ever-increasingly globalized society, it is extremely important for people to be able to learn from and understand each other.
 

 

 

2017 Interns:

carolineCaroline Thompson
Caroline was born and raised in Houston, Texas and is pursuing degrees in History and Politics and International Affairs at Furman University in Greenville. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Furman and spent a semester interning at the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Virginia while taking political science classes in DC. She hopes to pursue a career in international relations or global affairs after graduation.
karleeKarlee Gibson
Karlee was born in Akron, Ohio, but moved to Taylors, South Carolina in 2007. Karlee has just finished her sophomore year at West Virginia University where she is pursuing a major in broadcast journalism with a minor in Anthropology. At WVU, Karlee is President of their RTDNA (Radio Television Digital News Association) chapter, works as a media producer/peer mentor for the school’s financial aid office and works as a camera person for WVU sporting events. Karlee has a passion for discovering and understanding the unique backgrounds to different cultural, religious, and ethnic groups around the world. She is excited to see all types of people come together to recognize and learn from each other in a community setting.

Peterra McCarroll was born and raised in Greenville, SC. She is a sophomore at the College of Charleston. She is a political science major who minors in women’s and gender studies. Peterra also volunteers for the Urban League of the upstate. She strives for unity amongst all people despite religious affiliation, socioeconomic background, race, etc... She believes that all people can unite to provide a better future for the world one step at a time. After undergraduate studies, Peterra plans to go on to law school. Her plan is to become a civil liberties lawyer to protect the rights of all human beings.
