On the evening of June 14th, the Atlantic Institute of Columbia hosted the first of their two annual Ramadan Iftar-Fastbreaking dinners at the West Columbia center. While the sun was setting, Dr. Necati Aydinspoke to over 40 attendees about the importance of Ramadan in the Islamic religion. He explained that "Ramadan" means "thanksgiving" in Arabic, not "fasting" as some may expect. Experiential knowledge gained through fasting, Dr. Aydin shared, "is the key to understanding yourself and others." Night fell and a delicious, Turkish meal prepared by volunteers was enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this evening of educational open dialogue. We are grateful for your partnership in striving toward greater understanding together.
