A Day in the Life of our First Responders
June 7th at 7pm
Atlantic Institute strives to bring Interfaith, Intercultural and Educational Dialogue to all. In our striving to be diverse and inclusive, we are hosting a panel discussion spotlighting our First Responders. We will be speaking with a few first responders throughout South Carolina: Fireman, a Police Office and an EMS/EMT. This will be virtual through Zoom on June 7th. Our desire is to listen and learn about their experiences of what it is like to be a first responder. Each panelist will have about 5-6 questions to answer before opening to questions from the audience.
Tanee Thomas-Tedford is a certified Community Paramedic and the Assistant Chief of The PIER (Public Information Education and Relations) Bureau for Lexington County EMS in SC. She started with Lexington County EMS in 2007 as a basic EMT crew member and became a paramedic crew chief in 2009. She served the community on a 911 ambulance until December of 2018 when she was promoted to assistant chief. Currently her team (Sgt. Austin Pace and Corp. Tiffany McCall) started a community paramedic program with a goal of lowering call volume by reducing recidivism. They also focus on those dealing with mental health issues, substance use disorders, those experiencing homelessness, the vulnerable, the lost and the forgotten.
In addition she also had the honor of helping to create and chair the Emergency Services’ PEER (Personal and Emotional Emergency Response) Team since its inception in July of 2018.
She lives on 12 acres in Aiken County with her amazing husband. Together they have three beautiful and kind hearted daughters, three wild and loving grandchildren, three lazy horses, three spoiled rotten dogs and a mean yellow tabby cat named Eggo!
Joe served in the “Columbia Fire and Rescue Department” for 31 years. He rose through the ranks from Fire Fighter to Engineer to Captain to Battalion Chief and then finally Assistant Chief, the number two rank in the department. Joe's duties ranged from Human Resources, developing training programs and Incident Commander on emergency scenes. As a member of the Command Staff, he was always on call.
The following is a list of accomplishments:
-Developed Officer Candidate program for the CFD
-Developed a recruitment program targeted at recruiting minorities
-Greatly increased number and percentage of minorities applying
-Developed cadet program with RCSD I
-Developed content valid promotional system for CFD
-Help Developed promotional policies
-Formed safety committee
-Help reorganize rank structure:
Senior Firefighter position gives CFD greater flexibility with staffing needs
-Developed Job Tasks Analysis for ranks of:
Fire Equipment Operator
Outside of the department he was an instructor for the SC and National Fire Academies.
After retiring, he traveled and did consulting for the “Commission on Fire Accreditation International” where his main focus was on Human Resources, Promotion system and Training.
Joe was also a Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for six years for the Windsor Lake Ward (Congregation).
Currently he is now the SC VOAD representative for the church where his three primary responsibilities are:
1) Represent the Church on the state VOAD committee,
2) Build relationships of trust with partner, civil, and community agencies,
3) Serve as an emergency response subject matter expert to local leaders.
He is married to his wonderful wife, Cathy and and together they have six children. She has been a teacher for 38 years,
