Alexander v. SCNAACP, part I: Deciding who gets a voice.

Sunday, October 1
Hosted by Independent Dialogue Coordinator Catherine Fleming-Bruce

Join us on a discussion on public attitudes toward access to voting. It will focus on the Congressional District 1 (Charleston area) redistricting plan which will be heard by the United States Supreme Court on October 11.

This is an opportunity to discuss perspectives on the vote, why one person/one vote is important to citizenship, the evolution of this Supreme Court case, and different ways people are making their voices heard on the decision. South Carolinians will be traveling to DC for the hearing and the audience will be invited to join them.

Invited guests include representatives of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Upstate Action Alliance.

Alexander v. SCNAACP, part II: Amicus briefs as 'voices' that are part of the dialogue.

Friday, October 6
Hosted by Independent Dialogue Coordinator Catherine Fleming-Bruce

This conversation will be a review of the Amicus briefs, or 'friend of the Court' submissions that support various sides of the case. We will discuss them as illustrative of the dialogue that takes place in a Court case, and provides a way for the voices of a variety of actors, including community organizations and others, to provide them perspective for the public and the jurors to hear.
